Many requisitions arrive with lines such as "O-ring for pump" or "bearing for compressor". The crew knows exactly what they mean. The supplier does not.
A description without a part number, drawing number or dimensions forces the supplier to guess, or to send a stream of questions that delays the quotation. Either way the vessel loses time.
What turns a description into an orderable part
- Maker and model of the equipment, with serial number
- Drawing number and item number from the instruction manual
- The maker's part number, if listed
- For seals, gaskets and bearings: material and dimensions, or the marking on the old part
- A clear photo of the old part next to a ruler
When the manual is missing, a nameplate photo and a photo of the old part are often enough for us to identify it. It is always faster than a correction after delivery.
