Quality alternatives can save a great deal on wear parts. The problem is not alternatives themselves, but accepting the word "equivalent" without knowing what it covers.
An O-ring in the wrong compound can fail quickly in fuel or high temperature. A bearing with the wrong clearance class can run hot. A gasket of the right size but the wrong material may not seal at working pressure.
Questions to ask before accepting an alternative
- Is it made to the original drawing, and by whom?
- What material is it, and does it match the original?
- Are critical dimensions and tolerances confirmed?
- Is class approval or a certificate required for this item?
- What is the origin and the lead time?
We state the part condition and origin on every quotation line and can supply material details for alternatives on request.
