If your starting air compressor is a Sperre HL2/77, there are five parts you should always have on the shelf. Skip one and you will find out why at 2 AM in port.
The HL2/77 is one of the most common workhorses on bulkers and tankers built in the last 30 years. It is reliable, but reliable does not mean maintenance-free. The same items show up on almost every RFQ we receive for this unit:
- 1st and 2nd stage suction and delivery valves. These are wear items. Most fleets replace them at every major overhaul.
- Valve plates and springs. Small parts with big consequences: a cracked plate kills your charging time.
- Piston rings, LP and HP. Oil carryover and pressure loss usually trace back here.
- Unloader solenoid valve. When starting fails intermittently, check it before you blame the starter.
- Cooler O-rings and gaskets. Cheap, often forgotten, and the reason for half the small leak reports.
One compatibility tip: always check the compressor serial number before ordering valves. Sperre changed valve designs across HL2/77 production years, and a valve that looks the same is not necessarily the same.
