Class rules and the maker's recommendations set a minimum, but many fleets keep a few extra items on board, based on the parts that actually stopped their ships in the past.
A practical starting list
- Generator engines: one set of fuel injection valve nozzles, cylinder head gaskets and a complete set of valves
- Purifiers: a full overhaul kit and the operating water parts
- Air compressors: complete LP and HP valve sets
- Pumps: mechanical seals and bearings for cooling and fire pumps
- Boilers: ignition electrodes, a flame detector and burner nozzles
- Automation: spare sensors and transmitters for alarms that trip the engine
Review the list after every unplanned stop. The part that failed last time is the first candidate for the shelf.
